Parents Face Higher Book, School Costs in 2026 Session

As the New Academic Year Begins, Book and School Expenses Increase

For many students, the start of a new school year represents a new beginning. A feeling of routine is restored in daily life with new lessons, books, and objectives. However, parents are finding this time to be more stressful in 2026. The explanation is obvious: the expense of education is increasing more quickly than many household incomes.
Almost every cost associated with education has increased, from transportation to textbooks. For many families, what was once a tolerable annual expense has become a significant financial strain.

Price Increase for Textbooks

The rising cost of textbooks is one of the main issues this year. The cost of school books has increased in several areas, ranging from Rs. 100 to Rs. 500 each grade.
The explanation is straightforward: rising paper prices and printing costs. Parents are immediately impacted by publishers’ growing operating expenses. In fact, according to some reports, textbook costs may increase by 40% to 50% during the current school year.
This quickly mounts up for families with multiple children. Many low- and middle-class households can no longer buy a complete set of books.

Petrol prices, transport costs

One of the most costly aspects of schooling nowadays is school travel. Pick-and-drop providers have drastically increased their fees due to rising fuel expenses.
School transport is a must for working parents. They have to rely on school buses or private vans because managing daily school runs is not always feasible.
In such instances, the monthly cost of transport has doubled. This becomes a significant financial commitment over the course of an academic year.

Stationery Costs Are Climbing Fast

This goes beyond literature. Additionally, the cost of regular school supplies is rising.
These days, standard notebooks cost about Rs. 150.
The cost of medium-quality notebooks is Rs. 250.
Premium notebooks can cost up to Rs. 500.
Higher-level practical notebooks cost between Rs. 1,500 and Rs. 2,500.
Prices for products like markers and colours have increased by about 70%.
These are not high-end products. These are basic requirements for education. However, their costs are increasing more quickly than the earnings of many households.

$3.45 Billion Repaid: Is Pakistan Finally Turning the Economic Corner?

The pressure is increased by uniforms, bags, and shoes.

Additionally, parents are having to deal with increased expenses for school attire and accessories.
Rs. 3,500 to Rs. 5,000 for uniforms
Shoes: between Rs. 2,500 to Rs. 4,000
School bags: between Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 7,000
Certain uniforms and recognised vendors are required by several schools. This restricts parents’ alternatives and frequently results in increased spending.
Along with extra expenses for shoes, socks, and bags, parents are spending hundreds on uniforms. In instance, school bags are now available in a variety of pricing points, but sturdy models are frequently pricey.

Why Are Expenses Rising in Pakistan ?

The increase in school-related costs is caused by a number of factors:
Higher prices for primary commodities like fabric and paper
Transportation and distribution are impacted by rising gasoline prices.
Limited control over the cost of private schools
Increasing demand as the school year approaches
Because of these interrelated elements, controlling overall expenditures is challenging.

Effective Strategies for Cost Control

Families can take the following actions to lessen their financial burden even though prices may keep rising:
Purchasing shared or used textbooks
When feasible, reuse uniforms
Selecting unbranded stationery products
Making purchases prior to the busiest time of year
Over time, little choices can have a significant impact.

The Growing Problem of Inflation in Education

The consistent increase in educational expenses is a component of a larger trend known as “education inflation.” The cost of school goods and services has risen far more quickly in recent years than the growth in average income.
In several instances, educational costs have doubled or even tripled. This covers transportation, books, uniforms, and fees.
Long-term problems are being brought about by this trend. Many families may find it difficult to give their children a continuous education if costs keep rising at this rate.

Final thought

Learning and development should be the focus of the upcoming school year. Rather, it has turned into a financial burden for many families, necessitating meticulous preparation and sacrifice.
It is indicative of a broader trend in which the cost of schooling is rising annually.
Access to high-quality education could grow more uneven if this keeps happening without appropriate responses. And society at large is impacted by this issue, not just families.
